The performance optimization changes with the scale of volume of data. A solution like adding index might work if the data set is not too big. However adding an index to a very large table with millions of row can cause locking and can slow down write operations. If the underlying db supports having separate nodes or replicas for read operations would isolate the traffic of write operations which sometimes can cause row level locking or table locks
