Some organizations will even create data dictionaries or documentation to illustrate the data collection process, the meaning of variables, recommended analyses, and other things related to the data. However, regardless of the veracity of your data source, you should always be ready to do a lot of data transformation. Never in your career will you have data that is perfectly prepared for your analysis (even if you have a coworker clean the data for you).
