In my first internship at a baseball bat company, I planned an open house so that we could show off our manufacturing equipment and bat-making process. After planning this event for weeks, sending hundreds of invites, and spending hundreds on food, I only had 4 sign-ups. This was intimidating, and I had grossly over-spent in participation of the event. This felt like a disaster intially, but when I had an open and honest conversation about this with my managers, we strung together and amazing company appreciation event, and fed dozens of employees and while meeting their families. What initially felt like a failure turned into an incredible opportunity for the company, and through honest communication my team found meaningful solutions.

You want your team to know what to expect from your leadership as well as how you show up in meetings in general. I’ve worked at companies where employees were often worrying how leadership would show up in meetings. “Which version of them will we get today?” This caused tension and uncertainty. You want your team to focus their energy on doing their best work and working together, not on trying to manage your different moods.

There is a type of trust that is called "affective trust", which stems from emotional bonds and the care one shows for others' well-being and interests. As a leader you can create and foster "affective trust" by genuinely listening to your team members, allowing them to be vulnerable and share with you not only their successes but also their doubts and struggles as human being. This is a type of trust that comes from the heart and promotes empathy and understanding. You may want to consider putting more effort into organizing social events such as meals. Drop work related talk and focus on enjoying time together and getting to know your team members as people.

Building personal connections with team members goes a long way in establishing trust. Take the time to get to know your team on an individual level, understanding their strengths, aspirations, and personal challenges. Show genuine interest in their well-being and offer support when needed. This can be achieved through regular check-ins, informal conversations, and team-building activities.
