Never, ever go into a networking event without something to offer. The entire purpose of networking is to trade information and contacts, and if you come empty-handed, you're likely to get less value from networking. I've also found that it pays huge dividends to offer free advice and spend a little time networking with other freelancers who are just starting out, too.
