While starting as a content writer, i remember then, i had to take some gigs at very low rates in order to build my portfolio. Why it wasn't easy, the goal then, was to build experience and get my portfolio stacked. Yesterday while I was speaking with a client about a particular job and negotiating a price, i was confident stating my rates, why? This was because i understood the value and experience i was bringing to the table...I wouldn't have done that, say 5 years ago...But now i can do that, because i spent the time necessary building my brand.

It boils down to how you showcase your expertise. After analyzing the prevailing market rates, an extra margin could be added for: 1) Expertise in the subject 2) Past experience 3) Duration of the deadline - a higher rate for a quicker turnaround At the same time, for a continued relationship with a publication, a discount to market rates could be offered.

Evaluate your skills, experience, and the unique strengths you bring to your writing services. Are you specialized in a niche? How experienced are you with different writing styles? This self-assessment helps in setting a baseline for your rates.

Don’t just think about your experience—factor in your skills, niche expertise, and what makes your writing stand out. If you’ve got a knack for SEO or a specific industry, that adds value, so don’t undersell yourself.
