I have a couple of degrees relating to pastoral counseling but am an IT guy. Have been working in/with IT for almost a decade now. Listening is a key component in any relationship. There's a technique called reflective listening that helps the other individual know you're listening and helps confirm that they information has successfully been relayed. Look into this technique and consider reading a book on this topic. There's a lot to this lost art that we could all grow in.

Listening and been on the same page with your boss, you need to communicate. There is no other way. Getting more time on your boss’s calendar, or excusing and always going to their cabin, especially if you are an technical person, gives you more time to discuss details and stay on the same page. Theoretically, boss would need to interact with their team on a frequent basis. In reality though, the team need to act to get the time they want with their bosses. The more time spent together, the easier it is for your boss to know if you are on the same page. This results in a less stressful working environment.

In tech support, clarity matters. When talking to your boss about technical stuff, be clear and to the point. Avoid complex terms unless they're familiar and explain things briefly if needed. This prevents confusion and shows you're considerate of their understanding.

This precision also requires explaining when your explanation may not be the full story. Make sure you qualify any explanations that have caveats with "there are exceptions but...". It's not a good idea to give information in absolutes only to be disproven and have to explain later why there was an exception.

Keep your boss informed in tech support by providing timely updates. Schedule quick meetings or send brief emails regularly to share project status, issues, or completed tasks. This proactive communication builds trust and keeps everyone on the same page, avoiding unexpected problems.

I once scheduled a visit to one of our branches in another city but never gave a time frame for when I would arrive (usually pretty common because we don't always have specific deadlines to the projects we work on). I wasn't feeling well that day so left at a more normal time rather than leaving earlier to make sure I arrived closer to when the branch opened and stopped for 10-15 minutes along the way to care for some stomach issues. When I was about an hour away my boss called and asked where I was because the regional/branch manager had been expecting me and I hadn't shown up yet. Even just letting people know when you intend to arrive can reduce a lot of stress/frustration.

If you can offer realistic solutions that produce results, your boss will see you as a valuable member of the team. Let it be internal or external meetings, responding to emails, and taking phone calls, your boss is likely to be one of the busiest people in the company, they will appreciate if you can offload some of their burden and help them meet their deadlines as well. Offering to help also shows you can take on responsibility and take initiative, which will be plus point for you in future.

Consider also providing appropriate gifts at appropriate times. One year, after a review ended up going really well, I sent both my immediate supervisor and the owner over our department a small gift to say thank you for the willingness they made to accommodate for what I had been aiming for in a particular situation. During that review I offered a scenario that included the possibility of someone doing something wrong because they ate a bowl full of bad fruit loops that day and one of the owners remarked, 'Is there such a thing?' So, I sent a box of fruit loops to each of them with a gift card inside for a place I thought they might enjoy and indicated that I hoped that none of us would ever eat a bowl full of bad fruit loops.
