In my younger days, I used my PD as a guide. I identified each line item and my plan to exceed the expectations of my role. This approach led me to a few successful promotions.

On your on-boarding process ensure that you understand the Company's mission and vision as well as the departmental goals. Through this you will understand the expectations of the Company from you as well as your Boss. Once this is set secure your KRA/KPIs for this will serve as your metrics if you're meeting the criteria set for you to contribute to the success of the department and the Company as a whole. KPIs are your reminders that your performance are being measured. Sometimes we perform our roles based on calculated risks. Thus, the results often are only satisfactory. We should challenge ourselves to exceed our KPIs and be a valuable contributor to corporate success. You will not only establish role clarity but set precedence.

An example of getting out is when directly and in a very condescendent way they ask "HOW are you?" ... At that point, you'll make sure that the "boss" or whoever is involved is well aware of the overall situation (Map). The purpose of this exercise is to make sure that everyone is involved and to open the doors for ideas and noises (valid noise). If you'll master this step, you'll definitely hold the reins of the upcoming business challenges (defined beforehand). BUT, don't be afraid of the new challenges that will occur because naturally, opening a door or considering a noise is literally a stairway to a pivot (extremely).

Ideally, you should also make specific suggestions regarding your goals, KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) on how to measure them, and derive actions from them. Summarize these in a document. You can also inquire with the Human Resources department of your company if they have any improvement suggestions that make sense to integrate. They usually have a good overview of the company strategy and are in regular exchange with the management. Ideally, also check if your goals align with the company strategy. Then send this document to your boss a few days before the meeting so that he can prepare accordingly. In the meeting, adjust the goals so that you have clarity on what is expected and can focus accordingly.
