Expanding knowledge bases beyond the normal boundaries of safety education (e.g., legal studies, psychology, cultural ethics) will bring higher individual and organizational performance.

Integrating risk management into HOW we think is crucial to maintaining effectiveness and efficiency in any hazardous operation. Situational awareness is basically “How can l get hurt?” A significant portion of that assessment occurs during planning and preparation, but is a constant “OODA” loop (observe, orient, decide, act) during work . As addressed in my earlier article, a pre-work meeting to review the operation and potential “threats” to mission completion AND a post-Op review for improvement opportunities is a great practice.
