Understanding local need, and aligning your activities and theory of change to ensure you are delivering what is needed and wanted, to meet your long term ambitions. The other is making sure you consider this need, and your intended outcomes as part of the project planning process. This helps you embed social value in every stage and give you the best opportunity to deliver long term impact and real value to people and communities.

Ensuring positive social impact as a project manager is vital for the lasting effect that one hopes to have. Understanding the requirements for the situation and executing actions that align with the intended change allow for a lasting impact. Identifying what this positive social impact might be requires engagement with communities affected or who will be affected. Having support of the individuals who will be most affected allows for a sustained impact to be continued and felt. Communication, inclusivity and community engagement are three key elements that should be present in any project management strategy to ensure the least amount of resistance and backlash possible. Data driven, sustainable solutions help to drive changes forward.

This is my perspective on how project managers can ensure a positive social impact within the realm of Social Impact. Firstly, alignment between the overarching intervention strategy and the corporate strategy is paramount. Secondly, it's crucial to identify the genuine needs of the individuals residing within the company's sphere of influence. Lastly, formulating projects aimed at addressing these real needs is essential. Of course, throughout this process, it's imperative to keep the participation of the affected populations at the forefront of consideration.

Ensuring positive social impact on any project requires three things: 1. refined clarity of desired positive social impacts into easily observable behavioral and/or circumstantial (human, material, financial) gains above current baselines 2. refinement of verifiable gains in any domain into project milestones aligned to each of five ideal allies’ (investors, team, partners, customers, communities) potentials 3. engaging only high capacity and high readiness allies for project value given and impact value gained to accelerate progress on positive impacts. Achieving these three things ensures higher-performing positive social impacts on any project and delivers significant ROI above status quo baseline results!
