Data is power if you know how to use it. Even the best data is useless without good analysis. In my experience, I use this approach to get the most out of data: 1. Set a very specific goal. Example: Increase sales per executive this month by 20% over last month. 2. Identify the factors that directly affect that goal. Example: number of leads, response time. 3. Look for the KPIs that are strongly related to the factors identified in the last step. Look back at least three months to identify patterns and behaviors in the data. 4. Finish your analysis by asking what went right in the months when goals were met and what went wrong in the months when results were poor. Now you know exactly what it takes to reach your goal, data-driven.

In my personal opinion and experience, very few employees actually attempt to understand the strategic objectives of the company they work for. For a large part of my career I was one of them. Every organization works in a specific 'direction', and accordingly organize their output through portfolios, programs and projects. Its up to the interested employees to understand that direction through vision, mission, or through working relationship with management or mentors. The ones that understand the strategy would do a world of good both to the organization, and to to the self through sustained performance.

The most important skill in strategic planning could be gathering and analyzing data since data is the based for every decisions an organization made. Data tells the truth, and strategic decisions must be relied on truth to be made.
