Here's how you can enhance your security awareness training program through effective communication.

Try to use simple language to explain security concepts. Avoid technical jargon to ensure all employees, regardless of technical expertise, can understand. end regular updates and reminders about security best practices and current threats. Try to use interactive methods such as quizzes, simulations, and gamified learning to make training engaging. Share real-world examples of security breaches and their impacts to illustrate the importance of security practices. Update training materials regularly to reflect the latest security threats and best practices.

Don't use already made content as you should circulate the program around: 1. The industry of your company, 2. The type of employees, 3. The seniority level within the teams, 4. The examples included shall be circulated around the business needs. What I have mentioned here is a starting point to consider in the content preparation.

Awareness programs should be viewed as ongoing initiatives, not one-time events. Update content, add new information, adapt to business needs to ensure that the program remains relevant and effective.

As a history teacher, I used the medieval castle and modern warfare as a storyline to explain zero trust (and the old castle & moat approach we had). It worked well, since everyone remembers the knights and castles from their youth. We should use the same logic to explain that with the agricultural and Industrial Revolution 1 through 4 happening in such a short timeframe (1760 to now) we have so many technological advancements in such little time to adapt. If you look at road safety, it took over 50 years from the first car (end of 1800s) to having road safety measures applied (driving permits, driving exams, speed limits, safety measures,...). WWW started in 1989, smartphone post 2000... little time to learn & adapt....

I believe story telling is a great way to teach. It can make you vulnerable, but human weakness are , to me, a way to share thoughts and stories that strangers can relate to and interact with story teller.

This is the most effective way to disseminate information. That's why all cultures around the world started with story telling, then moved to writing. The simple reason that you can tell the same story with a different emphasis means it can be crafted to each person individually.

Narratives resonate with people. Share real-world incidents, case studies, or even fictional stories related to security breaches. Storytelling makes the content memorable and relatable.

Security awareness isn’t a one-time event. Send periodic reminders via email, posters, or internal messaging systems. Reinforce key concepts and best practices.

Involve senior management. When leaders emphasize security, employees take it seriously. Regularly communicate the importance of security from the top down.

Turn training into a game. Quizzes, challenges, and rewards create a competitive and engaging environment. Participants retain information better when it’s fun.
