Well, first of all take a good handbook of general linguistics :) no matter in which language or about what language. Then I would suggest to learn about generative syntax since it makes easy to understand how to model language.

It is best that you internalize conventional language uses before moving on to theoretical studies of that language. Achieving that includes asking the question 'how'. Asking 'how' a language system works is often better than asking 'why'. Regarding this, you must consume literature and texts of all types. This will allow you to develop a certain sense of multivocality within a language and understand how certain syntactic forms come to assume the roles and effects they now have. Studying syntax and semantics is all good but analyzing case studies of language in use in literature allows you to see why a certain phrase can mean its exact opposite in certain contexts, enabling you to understand language as it is.
