Feedforward and feedback are both valuable tools for development. Feedback is focused on what has already happened. It is essentially about providing information and opinions on past performance. Feedback often involves a discussion of mistakes, shortfalls, and problems, which can sometimes be perceived as negative, even when it's constructively intended. Feedforward is focused on the future. It's about providing suggestions and ideas for how to improve going forward. Feedforward is positive because it concentrates on potential solutions rather than past problems. It's particularly effective because it doesn't involve personal critique or judgment of past actions, which can make it easier for people to accept and act on.

Feedback is a good thing to receive. What I feel can bring feedback to another level is feedforward. This is a concept introduced by my good friend and renowned executive coach, Dr Marshall Goldsmith. The approach is simple. Feedforward, as the word implies, concentrates on the future. In giving feedforward, the focus is on what the person can do better next time. There is no looking back on what went wrong or awry. In doing this, the feelings of judgement typically associated with feedback does not arise. In my experience, feedforward helps people center their mind on a positive future to grow and develop with confidence and belief in themselves.

When someone gives you feedback, it's a great idea to start by saying thank you. Let them know you appreciate them taking the time to give you their thoughts. Even if they're being critical, show them you're grateful for the chance to grow and improve. Then, make sure you follow up to let them know you've taken their feedback on board and how it's helped you. By being grateful for feedback, you'll build a positive relationship and create a culture of improvement.
