Here's how you can enhance your persuasion skills through verbal communication.

Listening is the secret sauce in communications. You can be a brilliant, knowledgeable orator, but if you can't actively listen, your ability to engage, persuade or influence others declines dramatically. Active listening is....well, active! It's not passively standing before someone while they speak; it's not mentally rehearsing what you will say next. It involves being fully present, listening hard to hear and understand what someone is saying and asking questions to clarify what you're unsure you understand. Active listening is focused work foundational for meaningful communications and a requirement if you hope to persuade or influence your discussion partner or audience.

In a past role, I took over an account where the former account manager had basically forgotten to launch the client's campaign. The client was as mad as you or I would be. I called the client so he could yell it all out to me. I didn't defend anything or try to fight back. I gave him a lot of "yeahs" and "God, that's frustratings." When he was done saying what he needed to say, I told him I was his new account manager and, if he gave me a chance, I'd show him that this wouldn't happen again. In the end, he gave me that chance. Not because I'm so great, but because he *knew* I had heard him and was on his side. We don't do business with businesses--we do business with people!

I take my clients' marketing results personally so when they're worried, I'm worried. But for the client, there's an element of powerlessness that amplifies their worry. Digital marketing feels like a black box to most of them so when it's not working, all they know how to do is lower their budget or cancel our service. So my favorite way to help is to bring them alongside me and show (or at least tell) them what I'm doing. "You haven't gotten many leads lately but your ads are being clicked on. That tells me that if I make this or that change to your landing page, we might see a big improvement." I don't have to explain the world; I just have to give them enough to see how a problem is solvable. Just show them what to hope for.

It's common to hear a digital marketing client say, "I'm giving you all this money but not getting enough revenue back for it!" One time when a client said that, I shared my screen and we looked at all the leads they'd gotten from us recently. Together, we saw first of all that their lead volume was sufficient. Next, we looked at why so many leads hadn't converted. Basically, it turned out that it was mostly for flukey reasons--family emergencies, job loss, etc. We concluded that if clicks kept becoming well-qualified leads at this rate, the sales would come. And the next month, they did! The lesson was that bad months will happen. If your process is good, keep grinding. The payoff is coming.
