Generating a *range* of creative, high-quality options is crucial. Indeed, one of the traps into which individuals and teams/organisations can fall is to simply debate whether to accept or reject a given proposal. Creating a *suite* of feasible options that are (1) significantly different from one another (2) manageable in number and (3) organisationally compelling can often be achieved by tapping into the creativity of staff. In my experience, incentivising staff to come up with innovative options by utilising a degree of (friendly) competition in the team can be facilitate this (e.g. small prizes awarded to the most compelling option). And, of course, all options should be consistent with goals, knowledge, and capabilities.

In my experience, asking the following questions when important decisions are being made can help you to become an invaluable asset in your organization: 1. Are we clear on exactly what it is we want to achieve? (goals, values and objectives) 2. Have we thought about this problem from a number of different perspectives? (frame) 3. Have we accounted for our biases? 4. What information do we need? (foundation) 5. What are the things to which success and failure are most sensitive? (criticality) Asking these questions is likely to precipitate conversations that are very useful when a number of potentially different courses of action are being considered, and when significant resources are being allocated.
