I am a writer and I have many books published. I can write, for example, about one stone on the pavement talking to a tree. That's creativity. This is magic. For over three decades I have engaged in the practice of the martial arts. The current art I study Budo Taijutsu is known as a life art. I have found when individuals first become exposed to the arts, especially men, the competitiveness often comes out where they are trying to fight you. Ultimately the longer you study the arts you learn that the true side of the art is getting to the point where fighting or intense effort or energy expenditure is not required.

Creative expression can be compared to the experience of being a nurturing figure, such as a father. To foster creativity, it is important to infuse your dreams with passion and surround yourself with the tools necessary for their realization. By immersing yourself in the works of various authors, you allow your ideas to flow and take shape. Let your writing utensil guide you as you put your thoughts to paper, allowing the words to come alive. Like the growth of a child, your creations require time and patience to flourish. We were traveling to visit family and I pulled up to a full service gas station. The attendant began filling my tank after I set up payment and then I began checking emails on my phone. I heard the click and looked over and saw the pump stopped. I continued checking emails waiting for him to come by, after about a minute my wife said well we’re done let’s go. I began driving and soon realized the pump was in the gas tank. The attendant went inside and my wife assumed he finished as we both heard the pump shut off. I took the line back to the station and his eyes were wide as saucers. Luckily it had one of those quick disconnects. It was about a minute into driving away when my wife and I both looked at each other and burst out laughing.

I published my first book this year in the non-fiction genre. I got some feedback that a first fiction book would have done justice to my storytelling prowess better. There were others who plodded through as it was MY book, and said they were blown away by its non-preachiness and touched by the emotional highs and lows of my journey. Emotional resonance helps to bring home the message. Its an immutable truth that human beings are inherently drawn to narratives, often at the expense of cold, hard facts. Whether its writing, speaking, photography, filmmaking or painting; if one can bring out a poignant story that touches hearts then it will be impactful for sure. Storytelling requires study, research, planning, humility, empathy & humor.

Storytelling is an Art. Master the craft, to authentically connect. Learn from the masters. “It’s all good copy” - Nora Ephron, “You’ve Got Mail” “Screenwriting - the Bible” Read books that explore poetry, art, plays, character arcs, plot, pacing, tempo, structure, etc. What is character development? How do you show instead of merely tell? Successful storytelling. To be inspiring, you must be inspired. From Quentin Tarantino redefining the notion of the “classical narrative”, to Hitchcock’s use of incredible focus all in one shot, to Michel Gondry’s use of in-camera mastery to create “eternal sunshine of the spotless mind”. The examples are limitless both visually & in written form. Evoke a response in your audience.
