If you don’t know k, use density-based methods like DBSCAN. It automatically chooses cluster size & handles arbitrary shapes well. Input the minimum observations per cluster & neighbourhood size. Hierarchical method creates dendrogram or tree-like structure. In the last category, the data with higher likelihood are grouped together close to the central point. GMM is one example of it.
