As I mentioned earlier, the complexity surrounding the analysis of consumer insights has been catered to by the ever increasing use and availability of Artificial Intelligence. While these resources are helpful, the fluctuation remains a challenge —one that requires reinvention to stay connected.

There is no replacement to meeting your consumers on a regular basis. No amount of secondary data, trend mapping can teach you what your consumer feels or lacks.

First and foremost, understand market trends and consumer insights. In today's fast-paced world, staying ahead of the curve is essential. I encourage my brand managers to immerse themselves in customer-driven media, social channels, and review sites to truly grasp our brand's presence and perception. But, understanding and prioritizing the customer’s needs and preferences is paramount. We invest in customer research and feedback mechanisms, helping our brand managers create strategies that resonate deeply with our audience.

I very well value consumer insights a whole lot because it is in tune with my customer/user-centric approach. Also, understanding that different demographics and different age groups will interact to a product/service differently is a huge factor. This now takes us to stakeholder management because for some products (such as baby diapers), the primary stakeholders are not the users of the product and thus, their pain points have to be duly considered and factored in when creating solutions for them.

One of the common mistakes brand managers often commit is to try and cater to all segments, which dilutes the brand image and the brand cannot connect with the target audience effectively. Being everything to everyone doesn't work. There has to be a unique offering catering to the needs of your own target segment. Consistency in message across multiple platforms is also very important.

Don't know where to start with brand's positioning? Find your competitors. Make a chart to evaluate their strength, weakness, opportunities, and risks. There are endless free resources of charts online. Then, list your own strength, weakness, opportunities, and risks. Weight pros and cons and you will have a clearer picture of your brand.

Finally, measuring the success of your brand initiatives is key to improving your performance. Establish clear metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the effectiveness of your strategies. Track metrics like brand awareness, customer engagement, and conversion rates. Regularly review these metrics to understand what’s working and what isn’t, and adjust your approach accordingly to achieve better outcomes for your brand.

The evaluation of performance marketing has made many brand functions measurable on a daily basis. However, brand managers should set aside a good portion of these measurements to build long term equity. Once can have milestones, but those metrics should not be set for daily/monthly evaluation.

In my view, in brand management, success relies on key performance indicators (KPIs): Brand Equity: Measures brand perception and recognition. Customer Loyalty: Indicates repeat business and advocacy. Brand Reach: Evaluates brand visibility and market penetration. Brand Engagement: Measures customer interaction and involvement. Brand Sentiment: Tracks audience sentiment towards the brand. Brand Consistency: Ensures uniformity across all brand touchpoints. Market Share: Indicates brand's share in the market. These metrics, in my view, are essential for refining brand strategies and achieving long-term success in brand management.

An example I have seen is the tracking of brand popularity among the major target consume group of the brand! When I was building Jacobs Tonic Wine brand in Food and Beverages FMCG Company in the Southern Nigeria, I conducted this survey within my target Higher Institution areas and found out that my brand was always bought and rebottled as foreign "Night Train Tonic Wine" brand in the South South and sold as Premium quality drink!

Monitor your brand awareness and loyalty by using monthly surveys and social monitoring software (Meltwater, Brand24, to name a few). Use your social media analytics to work with the audience and combine the data with your surveys’ outcomes. Link your brand health improvements to sales and market share, and see if / how they are relevant. Monitor the changes and adjust. Be flexible, if needed, and love what you're doing :-) It's really tough to help sell products you don't believe into.
