Teaching core skills to teachers is more or less out of place. After all they are the ones to teach these skills to their learners. However, one core skills we need to continue to insist teachers practise is reflection. Through self-reflection and reflection on what others experience in the classroom each of us will be able to hone his/her core skills. Thinking outside the box in my words is simply emulating the children we teach - many teachers have forgotten they were children and the mischief they did was as a result of being different than adults. Embracing our children's non-compliance to the expectations set by the adults is a core skill, I believe.

Once you are a teacher besides curriculum and syllabus there is whole world of real life situations especially with teenagers as your students. A real teacher besides being critical thinker and analyser needs to be compassionate, have clarity with Loads insights. This makes the teacher capable of solving real life situations with correct perspectives. This in turn earns student's trust and belief in entity called teacher. This is possible with training workshop on real life situations.

I truly laud the idea of real scenarios. The examples in the abstract are great. Live recordings of school lessons and activities can also serve the purpose. Controlling the environment provides with structure and tools for subsequent use. However, the latter need to be well documented, shared among and resorted to being used by the whole team.

Reflection is key, as I have mentioned in the section of core skills. Let us all remember Kolb's learning cycle. Reflection often gives rise to a new refined cycle of learning activities. The all-known KWL (Know-Want to know-Learned) chart can easily become RLW (Reflected-Learned-Want to try) chart.

Collaboration could be brought to the edge by adding the "tenth man" (a quote from the film "World War Z"), whose purpose is to negate and dispute all solutions. Once teachers learn how to cope with the "tenth man" they can teach this technique to their learners which in turn will reinforce receptiveness to opposing opinions and deeper thinking.

In-house training among peers is great - especially when there are members of staff who have benefited from other trainings and bring home new skills. Assigning mentors to younger teachers is also helpful. An institution should spend a pre-approved budgetary amount on supporting training and CPD.
