A successful project is one that delivers on its original promises, not one that tries to do everything but ends up compromising quality.

I have been involved in many Aerosoace projects in my career spanning five decades. I share with you how we introduced systems engineering in 1978-80 time frame. To finish this Aerospace project was a Herculean task bundled with a lot of uncertainties over indigenous development/ buy option. Other aspects to look at interdepartmental relationships to support delivery of tasks and effective stakeholder management to ensure responsibilities and accountabilities are understood to avoid issues and conflict during tight deadlines.

In my experience , planning is one of the main things in executing a Systems Engineering project, but there is also one more lesser known, often ignored aspect which is Risk Management plan which has to be charted at the beginning of the project. With a proper risk management plan and change management plan follow up, the planning can be made realistic, scope creeps can be avoided and anomalies can be easily caught at the right time

Consider scheduling alternative review methods, like asynchronous reviews where stakeholders can provide feedback at their convenience. Also, proactive communication is key. Keep stakeholders informed about the project's progress and upcoming review deadlines. If necessary, escalate the issue to a higher authority to secure the necessary support. By being flexible and persistent, you can mitigate the impact of spotty stakeholder availability and maintain a healthy project rhythm.

Iterative review or health checks of any schedule is mandatory for any project to succeed. Whether it is done on a daily, weekly , bi-weekly or a montly basis is upto the nature of the project. But this helps us be proactive and tackle any challenges ( technical or managerial ) which come along the way.

Like there is a saying Customer is King, it is evident that any project has to be built entirely to address the needs of the customer. While planning and executing a project, our narrative should be such that the customer is engaged in the progress and review of all the milestones, however big or small they might be. Opening such channels of communication only increases the value and credibility of the project executor and often leads to successful completions.

The other benefit is involving them in tradeoff analysis. In reality, there is no having it all. When there is a design conflict the customer can offer insight or make adjustments to their program that are unknown by the system design team.
