Structures are designed to bear loads that arise from a need for space for services we have required and aesthetics, in some cases! When conceptualising a structure, it is important to plan how the structure would transmit loads along its load paths safely thru the foundation to the ground. Both vertical and horizontal load paths must be carefully considered also, the elements of the structure must be able to withstand the load which they have been provided for. Derive wind loads from available wind data, self weight of structure, code permitted variable loads and applied them on the structural model in a manner it would be in real life.

It is a good practice to design high rise buildings as resilient buildings. In this light, dynamic analysis is essential for these buildings. The responses of the structure in multiple degrees of freedom have to be evaluated and provided for. Also, requirements for for resilient building must be met by the building spatial arrangement at the conceptual stage. This makes it easier for the building to withstand dynamic loadings, minimise eccentricity in building's mass and rigidity centers.

Conceptual design is critical for tall building projects. At this stage, you will be able to determine carefully the most appropriate vertical and horizontal load paths to be adopted for your structural framing. It helps you to clearly define required utilities and tie-ins thus establishing project design interfaces required for a successful project completion. Schematics for the structure utilities will be developed at this stage, structural framing, spatial arrangement (align this with HVAC expert to ensure energy-efficient cooling system). For resilient structures, there are guidelines provided in Eurocode 8, ASCE 7-10 and other seismic design codes that must be followed to have a properly conceptualised resilient building.
