Our instinctive reaction - call it flight, flight or freeze - is a response to threat which, these days, can come in the form of an email, WhatsApp notification or conversation. Being able to recognise we’re responding emotionally, so being able to pause before allowing logic to catch up, is a powerful skill to master.

You can apply a model to active listening - we call them the three Rs… REPEAT back what’s being said REPHRASE by saying back using slightly different words REFLECT feelings - “that must have made you feel…”
