Here's how you can enhance communication and teamwork on set for film crews.

Establishing clear roles within your film crew is essential for enhancing communication and teamwork. Project management tools like Trello or Asana help organize tasks and deadlines, ensuring everyone stays on track. By integrating these tools, you streamline workflows and enhance collaboration, leading to a more efficient production process.

Everything will take longer than you think. So don't fight it. Build schedules with buffer for the inevitabilities of delays. But still be ambitious, the key is to keep track of time throughout the day, week, shoot, etc and be in a perpetual state of openness to adjustment. As the sun starts to move, the order of the shoot may adjust. As you start to run out of time things will get cut or have to change, which is why I am always looking ahead, checking in (with myself and the team), to make sure we are giving the right amount of (limited) time to the maximum effect (on screen). And this is not just about getting shots. The same applies to breaks, meals, discussions. Each feeds the creative and must be valued as potential onscreen impact.

Conflicts will arise, sometimes with your closest collaborators/friends other times with disgruntled crew you barely know. Navigating conflict should always be grounded in RESPECT and RESOLUTIONS. Understanding what happened is needed, but many times on set, we need to solve for the problem first, then once we're back on track, we look into what went wrong. When there is a contract/pay issue- I look at the COMMUNICATION first. Emails/texts, contracts to see how my words or theirs could have been miscommunicated. Then carefully and compassionately craft a response. But don't try to prove a point- focus on clarity, compassion & resolution. Even if the outcome is to not work together again, always do your best to leave on amicable terms.
