Here's how you can enhance communication in the education field with emotional intelligence.

Incorporate EI into the Curriculum Incorporate emotional intelligence lessons into the curriculum, helping students and staff develop self-awareness, empathy, and social skills. Apart from understanding EI, you must also be willing to work on your EI as a leader. I wasn't always the leader with high EI, there was a time I assumed everyone knew what to do and so I was often impatient with those who seemed to do otherwise. Being a class teacher taught me otherwise, I had struggling learners in my room and I observed that they blossomed when I waited for them, praised them and treated them as an important part of the class. Unconsciously, I learnt to be more accommodating of everyone around too.

With emotional intelligence, it can help with concise and clear information you need to pass across especially with a tone that will not come across as rude or condescending. It will help in highlighting every area you need to address and clear communication as regards any area.

One thing that is helpful is to put yourselves on the student's feet. As learners, they are discovering a new world and they face many types of emotions during this process. So, it is not how complex the content or the skill is to be developed, but they are connected also to the emotions that arise while learning. Think about the time we are learning a new thing, what kind of emotions do you feel? Fear, excitement, shyness, joy, anger? Our students need first to identify what they are feeling in order to organize themselves for the next steps of learning.

It is important that you are a good listener to understand and know your team members. Never ignore the simplest sign of the weakest link by assuming all is going on well with the rest of the team. Be an active listener and follow up with every member.

This is one of my favorite skills and it is so important to develop it fully. It means that "listening" is different from "hearing". Besides that, listening involves not only the auditorium sensibility, it goes to the type of the learning style that each one has more sensibility. Also, we can mix all the senses to enjoy the listening process in a more effective way. Awareness is the key and mindfulness can be a tool for practicing to be aware of selective content and focus.

Empathy is a very relevant attribute to possess in leading a team. In as much as team members may want to be too emotional, you need to show your empathy at all times. Resolution may not be what they expected but it will be on record you made an effort.

Many students seek for health and safe connections during their school time. They have many peers and they can choose and create their social safe small bubbles, although it is good to encourage them to work and have relationships with every type of classmate. On the other hand, a teacher is harder to choose or change. So, the teachers' role and their empathy or not influences a lot how the teacher-student bond can be a good path for the teaching and learning process.

As I said in the prior criteria, emotions have names. Some of them we can feel it in the body's part, as butterflies on the stomach, wet hands, heart beat speeding up and many other situations. Students must feel comfortable saying to the teachers what they are feeling, their struggles and dreams.

Conflict resolution may not be avoided as this will always be a recurring aspect in a team. Always ensure conflict is resolve immediately and ensure clear communication as to why conflicts should be minimal.

As a science teacher and empathy enthusiast, I've found that emotional intelligence in feedback is like a pH buffer - it keeps the learning environment balanced! I developed the "Emotion-ometer" technique. Before giving feedback, I gauge the student's emotional state, adjusting my approach accordingly. It's like titrating communication to achieve the perfect reaction! We also practice "Feedback Theater," role-playing scenarios to hone our EQ skills. It's surprising how a dash of humor can make constructive criticism more palatable. By infusing feedback with emotional intelligence, we're not just communicating - we're catalyzing growth. And that's a formula for success in any educational equation!
