This self-awareness helps you choose projects and roles that match your interests and strengths, making you feel proud and sure of yourself. Keep in mind, working in education isn't just about knowing a lot about a subject, but also about growing personally and feeling fulfilled by what you bring to the field.

This is probably core to any field. Starting at a smaller University, I’ve been able to see many facets of the Administrative Operations of Higher Ed. It gave me insight on each person’s role and how they touch other departments in some form or fashion. We are all cogs within the building and knowing where we fit with our skill set is crucial. Finding joy with where we fit is essential.

A career in high and senior school is highly satisfying as the rewards both personal and professional is known by the end of the year vis-a-vis board result and the love from the students I teach. Even after leaving an organisation, if a child remembers you and tells you that you were the best teacher ever, it gives a high, a sense of achievement and a sense of belonging. Often the most misunderstood lot, the students at the end of the day are just children. Giving them space, respecting their thoughts and guiding them if they need my inputs is what makes me want to ‘BE’ amongst this age group.

These goals should encompass a spectrum of aspirations, from academic achievements to personal growth milestones, tailored to align with your unique talents and passions.These milestones serve as invaluable markers of progress, validating your journey and bolstering your confidence along the way. Siempre es importante la organización propia. Tener objetivos y metas planteadas de manera clara, en el ámbito profesional y laboral, ayudan a tener consciencia del progreso. Las acciones y decisiones que tomemos estarán enfocadas en alcanzarlos y nos obligarán a estar constantemente trabajando en una evolución propia.

One things I have found useful is in choosing a career students are often confused: a life skill that I often teach my students is to set a goal: a skill I often attach to my profession. Once you know what you want to achieve, we just got to make it happen. In essence it builds your confidence and adaptability in this VUCA world.

Don’t just attend with your colleagues at your institution. Be sure to have lunch and after hours connections with those you have not met to build your network.

Challenges are part of the journey in Higher Education. Without them, we’d be bored and likely want a new occupation! I enjoy a good bump in the road (though the new 2024-2025 FAFSA is one that I would’ve wanted to drive around) because it makes you not only stronger, but more knowledgeable about the operations of Higher Education. Challenges are simply growth opportunities.
