I can't recall who to attribute this to, but he said "the pace of change will never be slower than it is today." When you wish it would slow, this can be a realistic thought to get you moving. Embrace change to demonstrate you are an innovative leader and your organization strives to be relevant.

One of my favorite quotes is “the only constant is change”. What might surprise most people is this is not a quote from an 80’s era business management book. It’s a quote by the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, who said it about 2,500 years ago. Change is not a new concept, but being willing to accept change and embrace it has to be actively taught. Humanity has been resisting change for thousands of years, but that has not stopped it from happening yet.

To foster innovation, you must first embrace change as a constant and inevitable force. This means letting go of outdated practices and being open to new ideas that can disrupt the status quo. Strategic thinking involves anticipating shifts in the market and consumer behavior, and being prepared to pivot when necessary. By viewing change as an opportunity rather than a threat, you create a fertile ground for innovative ideas to take root and flourish. For example, a ride-hailing company can leverage strategic thinking to anticipate a shift towards electric vehicles and invest in charging infrastructure. This way, they're prepared to adapt and maintain a competitive edge.

The essence is, we live today in myriads of information sources. Take stock of how many software services that you subscribed the last one year but haven't fully utilized yet? How about books that you bought from the book fairs? We must accept that change is the order of today's century. Yes, change is an opportunity as well as threat. Business leaders prefer status quo but ignored changed. They should acknowledge change thus they can start working on what next. Avoiding change is like avoiding taxes, someday it will come after you and no way out! ;)

By staying ahead of the curve, you'll secure your competitive edge.

As leaders, we must spend time understanding things that are happening beyond our line of sight. A few weeks ago the WSJ had an article about business schools retooling their curriculum to incorporate AI. The message to students is this is your second brain. Academia does not move that quickly! This is the type of article that we read and think that's interesting. We should ask "what will this mean for my business?" These people will be coming to the workforce with heightened AI experience and expectations. An emerging trend we need to prepare. for.

Identifying trends can help provide necessary insights to understand the market and competitive dynamics and providing recommendations to the leadership regarding what steps to take, what specific go-to-market strategy to follow to succeed in the marketplace and stay ahead of the competition. Identifying trends in itself is not enough till the time appropriate action is taken to encourage innovation based on data driven insights on what do the end customers value. Identifying trends does however provide a direction to the overall innovation process to contribute to the strategic thinking by helping fine tune the strategic focus of an organization and ensuring that it is in tune with the market realities of the present and the future.

Encouraging creativity within a team isn't just about brainstorming sessions or colorful post-it notes; it's about cultivating a culture where every voice is heard and every idea is respected. It's about creating a safe space where unconventional thoughts are embraced, knowing that innovation often stems from the unexpected. This approach not only sparks creativity but also instills a sense of ownership and empowerment within the team, driving them to push boundaries and redefine what's possible.

Combining creative skills with technical ones transforms an idea from mundane to extraordinary. A lucky few are talented at both technology and creativity. Creative thinking is often a personality trait, but hanging around others who do is a good way to develop the skill if it does not come naturally!

Celebrate ideas. We can build on ideas and make it better. Creativity brings new tools and approaches to customers but also can improve efficiency. Make it counter-culture to say "no" or "that will never work." "What if" and "Let's hear more" keep the conversation going. Don't worry, the first idea rarely looks like the final solution. Let the process play out.

That's awesome but if we always focus on what is ultimately possible we don't deliver what is realistic today. Be agile, push something out. Evaluate the outcomes and feedback. Set a time for the second iteration. Perfection is unattainable because we should never be finished innovating and creating.
