Encourage everyone to contribute by directing questions to quieter members. Follow up with probing questions like “Can you elaborate?” to deepen the conversation. Summarize points to show understanding and keep the discussion on track. This approach fosters a collaborative environment where all voices are heard and valued, leading to more inclusive and productive team discussions.

We all know that it’s sometimes easier and faster to provide the answer ourselves, but that won’t help the individual or us to grow ??

Open ended questions with a future oriented perspective. Questions that relate to long term aspirations, desires, needs. Where would we like to be on the future? What will be key for our success 5 years from now? How this challanges can benefit us next year? What would you like to do 3 years from now? We tend to focus our discussion on short term too much. Quarter, month or this year discussion bring more of the rational mind into action. Long term perspective stimulate the team spirit, joy and passion in people who we direct questions towards.

Frame your open-ended questions to focus your team members on the priority topics of the discussion. Adding extra context to your questions brings the attention of your team members on what's important. I've seen Leaders ask totally open-ended questions and find that the discussion goes tangentially without generating a way forward. Change the way you ask questions so your team understands what they should be answering. I've found a small amount of planning to define discussion objectives/agendas is useful to structure the flow of discussions/questions, transforming the engagement of your team. They'll be motivated to interact and collaborate as they see how their contributions are making progress towards achieving productive outcomes.
