Before posting a bold question: make sure that you know where you stand on the topic, and be aware of the direction(s) the discussion could take in the comments. Your comment section is part of your brand experience.

A question that hits right a the source of fears/problems/issues/etc opens the door wide open for an honest and interactive conversation. It breaks down barriers if we're willing to be honest with ourselves and each other. The beginnings of trustful relationships often begin with a tough question and honest response.

I'll give you a hint. "What's your favorite color?" does not qualify as "ask boldly." Cut it out with the mindless engagement bait. You look like a putz when you do this. Not a thought leader.

Most leaders are apprehensive about publishing their true thoughts as they worry about negative consequences. Many prefer to stay quiet for avoiding blowback, or trolls, or even risk to their personal brand by saying the wrong thing. Some fear that they will sound robotic and inauthentic when discussing latest tech or significant breakthroughs in their business. But your audience is changing. We have become a society that celebrates the highs and lows of life. We seek content that reflects reality—sometimes ugly and often gripping; never perfectly planned or immaculately groomed. Flaws make us interesting. Scars show our strength. Tap into your emotions and show your true authentic self.

I remember a friend's 4-year old asking "why" repeatedly, about everything ... her curiosity to understand the world around her, even at 4, confirms the essence of curiosity and how it encourages growth and creativity. I always encourage my team to consider the "what if"s, the outlandish ideas that may seem impossible. Then we walk through and break down the steps by continuously exploring and asking questions (sometimes, even going down the rabbit hole) to see where the conversation leads.

The best thought leaders challenge the status quo and aren't willing to take things at face value. They look underneath the surface of an idea or trend, play devil's advocate, and aren't afraid to make bold claims. When you read an article, find something in it that gives you pause, that makes you question, and then ask yourself, "what do I think?" Unpopular opinions make great thought leaders because they challenge the status quo.
