Here's how you can embody the essential qualities of a successful leader in Strategic Communications.

I think an important addition beyond having a clear vision to communicate to your team is to have a clear message around how each of them contribute to the vision in their role/team. Team members who not only understand the vision but also directly align and attribute their roles to successfully executing on that vision are more engaged and likely more satisfied knowing how their impact aligns to the broader company goals.

There's so much difference between listening and comprehending. You can listen to your team all you want but if you're only listening to react, it won't really make much of a difference. Listen actively, understand what they are trying to say and then offer a reply which takes into consideration their opinions and views. Show empathy in communication, direction in roadmaps, and for sure you'd build a culture of trust and collaboration.

Active listening goes hand in hand with transparent communication. While engaging with your team it is important that they know of all the relevant information that can be provided for them to feel trusted and responded. This proves avenue for them to understand they are being heard, listened to, and their contributions are part of the greater conversation. As you lead, these are important aspects to keep in mind. Being a leader IS a two-way path where we should always learn from each other through active feedback loops.

Act with Integrity: Uphold ethical standards in your communication. Be honest, transparent, and responsible in all your interactions. Take Responsibility: Own up to any mistakes or miscommunications and address them promptly. Demonstrating accountability builds trust and respect.

Unfortunately it’s too often I’ve heard leaders champion transparency and yet operate in unethical grey areas. If your strategic communication is fueled with “lip service” but you don’t back up your words with actions, your communication efforts will ultimately be ineffective. It’s important to remember company culture is driven from the top down, and if leadership’s ethical North Star is spinning, your credibility and ultimately your company will suffer.

In strategic communications leadership, continuous learning is essential for adapting to evolving media landscapes and refining messaging strategies to effectively engage diverse audiences and drive organizational success.

Somehow this seems almost turned around. A strategic leader must have all of the capabilities noted above and must be able to communicate clearly and concisely the activities noted above.
