In the context of large projects I have found it helpful to review similar scope projects. Find out consultants and contractors were involved and what was the planned and actual schedule? Involving the right experienced resources early enough is a critical success factor. Good idea as with the risk assessment but would also throw a toolbox talk in there as to who do what and what to do put lesser experience ratings or engineers with more experience ratings or engineers and if for any reason job should turn critical or a situation occur where job become hazardous or dangerous a stop work policy should also be in place

The best I’ve seen this was in a Shipyard in Yokohama Japan where the project required removal of a crankshaft from a large container ship regrinding and replacement. A project taking a few months to complete but the time flow charts for all tasks involved was never more than about half an hour out. This can only be achieved by making sure the right resources are in place at exactly the right time. I have been involved in other projects in Japanese shipyards and the planning, execution is something to behold compared to other experiences I’ve had and the result in beyond comparasen highlighting the importance of resource allocation.

If possible have Owner supplied materials delivered and stored at the project location. All materials should be clearly identified for ready reference. Discuss material flow with shipyard project manager and agree flow of materials to work sight.

Resource management has changed over the last few years. Once easily accessible items are no longer stocked: suppliers preferring to manufacture on demand which therefore introduces much longer lead times.

Ensure QA personnel are being provided with necessary documentations / access to work areas etc. Address any QA areas of concern immediately.

Determining how many man hours and resources have been burned on specific work and summing for the project is important to monitor and then compare to what was original planned. This gives a useful indication of schedule performance, I.E if work is taking 120% more resources than planned you can expect the same situation to continue, this may significantly delay your project and the same applies to costs, perhaps you have a lump sum project with a string specification but if on T&M terms, you may also experience significant budget overrun. Earned Value Management is the Project Management concept described and this can be a powerful monitoring tool for predicting a likely outcome based on current performance.

Be familiar with Management Of Change processes and tools. It offers security when making "quick informed decisions" when deviations do result from risks idenfied (3.). MOC does not mean acception of the risks associated with the deviation, but forces the team to work on mitigations.

Be prepared for the worse conditions and other factors that may lead to delays and try to the extent possible to plan ahead. You will not predict all shortcomings and you cannot control everything around you, but you can control how you utilize the skill set around you and how prepared you are at all times. You need to study and lead people around you to study. Try to accommodate the weakest link of the team (sometimes you will be the one!) and embrace trust and respect. Regardless of your position and the factors that may only affect you, you cannot succeed alone
