Here's how you can effectively train and upskill employees on new technology for analytical tasks.

Ask yourself whether this program is a, “want” or a, “need.” If the answer is the latter, then be ready to state at least three reasons. That would help you explain to your team-members the challenges that need to be addressed and relate the program to the resources and support provided to overcome those challenges. The buy-in should be a natural response if these ideas are presented in an honest and candid manner. On the other hand, if the answer is that the program is a, “want,” it would be best to put that idea on the back burner.

Technology can assist in improving the tools we use to rollout training. We must also be mindful of this who are not technologically inclined, so companies and traing providers must to at other similar tools.

When deciding on tools or resources, prepare a chart to compare and contrast the pros and cons of that tool or resource. This will help you determine the most feasible options. Consider the key characteristics that align with the identified needs and indicate which ones offer support for free or at a reasonable price. Include that information in the chart. Seek for opinions from colleagues by sharing your insights along with the chart. Take notes of the feedback you receive and add the valuable points to the message you will prepare when communicating the final decision to your team-members.

A proper training plan must be developed and rolled out such that the learner can also plan their time accordingly. Learners should be part of the training plan input, so they have a sense of owning the plan.

Consider providing to all participating team-members the opportunity to reflect on their learning, particularly form their peers. Create a 3-2-1 Form where participants share three big take-aways, two actionable items, and one suggestion. This exercise could enrich the discussion and motivate the team to foster collaboration beyond the training program.

Encourage team members to partner on projects with new technologies so they can share the mental load of using a new program or tool. Also, encourage sharing of tips and tricks during daily or weekly huddles. This encourages individuals to collaborate and also recognize each other’s skills and approach to new learning challenges.

Learners must be given the opportunity to use what they have learn in a practical environment. Theory alone will not cement learning. This will require leaders to boldly move learners into sections of the work environment where the practical training can take place. Too many Learner's have theoretical knowledge with little to none experience.

This is a crucial item to be considered when you create the comparison chart I mentioned in my comment in section 1 related to choosing a tool or a resource. The knowledge and skills the team-members will acquire by the end of the training program must be aligned with the identified needs and should be a strong element to help them do their job more efficiently and effectively.

It is important to share the results of this evaluation with all stakeholders and team-members. When they see that their feedback and suggestions are being considered, not only will they appreciate it but they will also realize how important their work and their commitment is for the organization.
