It is good to accept that the task done did not meet the expectations and importantly, to accept that there is scope to rectify or improvise it. Being optimistic about overcoming failure helps in a big way!

My advice is to keep yourself rooted in reality. In the middle of Optimism and Pessimism is reality... Don't let the process highs get too high, or lows too low. At the end of the day it is a process. Create a process that works, and consistently execute this - unpack your process at the end of each search project, understand what went well, what didn't go so well and what you'd improve for next time - W3 is a simplistic feedback and improvement tool. W1 - what went well? W2 - what didn't go well? W3 - what would you improve for next time? If it isn't broke don't fix it, or if there is a 1% gain from a change of process than look to continuously improve.

What part of your process was not right? Did you find the right person, but misunderstood the brief? Did you fail to adequately prepare your candidate for their interview? Did you fail to understand your candidate's real motivations to move? By facing failure head on. Finding the true reasons why you failed to make the hire. You can then reflect and learn from this moving forward.

At the end of the day, we're in the people business - sometimes clients change their minds, candidates reject offers - this happens - this is the reality of the industry. The sooner you can drench yourself in the reality of the situation - the sooner you perfect your process to mitigate risk of "failure", you become more reliable and successful for your customers.
