Here's how you can effectively manage and resolve workplace conflicts as an executive.

A workplace which allows conflicts to freely be expressed fosters growth as conflicts are just expressed grievances or disagreements with certain practices relating to organisational policies or behaviour.

Conflict in workplace is often rooted in the distribution of resources "of all kinds" (budget, talent, access to, mandate for, support through, information, enablement, trust etc.) It is often a symptom of something being at stake for people. It is often relating to a (real or perceived) lack that causes emotional (fear, frustration) or existential (lack of control, competence) consequences. When in doubt always choose to ask what people think they need to be successful.

In my years of executive coaching, I've found that assessing the situation is crucial in conflict resolution. It's not just about finding a quick fix, but digging deep to understand the underlying issues. This approach aligns with servant leadership, as it prioritizes the needs of the team and organization. By being curious and inquisitive, leaders can uncover the true cause of conflicts and address them with humility and innovation. It's a challenge, but with passion and a commitment to growth, it's possible to turn conflicts into opportunities for improvement.

Active listening? It’s not just important—it’s your secret weapon in any conflict. Here’s the deal: give someone a safe space to talk, and you’ll see things cool down fast. Make them feel heard and understood. Dive deep into their perspective, and really get where they’re coming from. That’s how you build real empathy. When you do that, you’re not just solving problems, you’re preventing them.

As an executive, it is your role to communicate clear boundaries to your team. It is more effective to use instances where boundaries are crossed to reiterate and communicate clear boundaries and as well as the consequences of crossing boundaries and the resolution process that follows. But the most important part of piece of is to follow through on the boundaries. As a leader it is your responsibility to uphold and enforce the boundaries. So letting things slide, setting exceptions to rules etc can undermine you long-term.

It’s your job to set clear boundaries for your team. Listen, when someone steps out of line, it’s a perfect moment to double down and make sure everyone understands not just the rules, but also the real consequences of breaking them. The most crucial part? Following through. You’ve got to walk the talk. If you let things slide or make exceptions, you’re basically telling your team that the rules aren’t that important. That’s a fast track to losing respect and authority. Stick to your guns—it’s essential for long-term success.

Contracting and having clear boundaries are the structural key to smooth collaboration. Contracting here means for the time under consideration providing for alignment on the various roles, responsibilities and definitions of success.

Promoting collaboration is a leadership aspect and a leader's job. He/she is critical in bringing in the Way of working, the how - by showcasing, by leading by example. Existing structures, processes and "culture" can be hindering collaboration. Yet having "no structures" does not mean all is set for collaboration.
