Having worked with/managing remote teams offshore for over 8 years now, a remote model works if implemented well. Beyond setting goals, expectations, progress tracking - Communication is key. The tools and cadence in communicating is crucial, so select carefully. Set regular org level scrum calls, and micro project-based calls for defining or redefining project needs. Don't micromanage with "attendance" calls - trust will degrade and burnout will set in. Set only those calls crucial for the work. Trust that your team is doing their work. Don't also, set a couple one-size-fits-all calls a week and expect the engine to run; managers should keep a close watch 24/7 and pull-in/guide teams as needed to ensure communication is optimal.
