Proper planning and preparation are key to success. Architect your network designs so that security is at the heart of the plans. Much like the layout of a medieval castle or a bank, identify, isolate and fortify your network defences using a layered approach (aka Defence in Depth (DiD)) to isolate your important business systems from the less important environments. Prioritise the remediation of any identified vulnerabilities, based on actual the perceived risks. Ensure that your SOC has an awareness of the network designs. That way, long before an opportunist attacker has the chance to compromise your most important business services, there's an increased chance of their ABNORMAL activities having been identified and responded to.

Identify all critical assets, including hardware, software, and data. Identify potential threats and vulnerabilities to organization’s network environment. Assess the likelihood and impact of identified threats to prioritize mitigation efforts. Implement Strong Network Security Controls as Firewalls/NGFW, IDS/IPS, Network segmentation. Implement Access Control as Role based access, 2FA/MFA. Have patch management process for all assets. Continuous Monitoring and Threat Detection using SIEM, Threat Intelligence.

Think like a realist. Always think that your corporate network will get compromised and then plan and prepare for such an eventuality. - Employees are human, they make mistakes: 1. Anticipate. In the event of a compromised network, how can you limit the impact? 2. Withstand. How quickly can you return your Important Business Services to normal operations? How often do you test your capabilities? 3. Recover. What risk responses are applied, following a capabilities test or actually incident? Are you able to modify your business operations to mitigate any emerging threats? 4. Adapt.
