Bosses, clients, and non professionals, in general, don't care about the details. They only want two things: the result and when it will be delivered. Unless you're working with other professionals (such as outsourcing from studios), the best thing to do is to splice the process into several major milestones or processes and have clarity on how long they will take. Don't bother going into details unless you're asked to explain them. Sometimes, it's not even a good idea to show them work-in-progress (WIP) since they might mistakenly perceive it as the final result. Do present them with regular updates, but only with things that are closer to the final result. Or the other term is "vertical slice".

Add some buffers to those timelines because things may (and often do) go wrong. When that happens, it's pretty hard to explain to non-professionals, and often nobody knows how long it will take to fix them.
