Assesing skills has always been very company focused, but I think a test or exercise is not the best way to showcase everyones best qualities. In that sense for me it's better to create a more personal way to asses skills, where each individual can showcase their abilities without being put into certain frames.

In my experience, having a well tuned assessment process during the interview is key. This should be developed prior to the interview process and should be based on the actual work that the role requires. It should be general enough that someone outside of the company with skills in that specific language should be able to achieve but also challenging enough to gain insight into their potential. Once this is fine tuned and accurate then gaining insight into their abilities should be much easier. Your internal IT leaders should be able to create this so it is key to work with them as well as other departments during the interview process.

Assessing skills through practical evaluations has been essential in my hiring process. For instance, we used coding tests to gauge a candidate’s problem-solving abilities and technical proficiency. When hiring a technical team member, I always like to put out different client disaster scenarios like x client calls at 9 am and they've no internet and no access to their server, and then I listen and evaluate what steps and in what order they would do them in as that will tell you a lot about their technical skills and it will also give you insight into how their logic and reasoning works.

To effectively interview, the first step is to clearly define what you expect from the role. Mapping these requirements throughout the interview process is crucial For example, One method I use while interviewing tech support is to create a technical support quiz that candidates must solve without internet access, with at least one question with all incorrect answers. I sit with them during the quiz and provide less time. After the quiz, I review the incorrect answers with them and then provide a laptop with internet access so they can find the correct solutions. This approach allows me to assess their communication skills, technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, willingness to learn, and how they handle pressure to name a few.

So many people use voodoo methods in hiring and hope they find the right candidate. It often comes down to how likeable they are or a feeling but there are 5 questions I ask candidates. I will go through their work history and ask them for each job: 1) What were you hired to do 2) What was your high point and greatest achievement 3) What was your low point and most challenging time 4) Why did you leave? 5) What would your manager say about you? For technical roles it's also a bit easier too because you can see their work. But make sure to get clear on what their role actually was in the team. And I've learnt that many people from big branded companies are average. You can also give them a paid work test.

This is so critical and, more often than not, handled wrongly. 1. Don't try to low-ball. Offer them the salary they should be on at their level, maybe a bit higher, so you've got the advantage. 2. Be completely transparent about work-life balance options. Since COVID, most want Hybrid work at least. Find out what they want, and if their position can allow it, approve it. 3. Always have Professional Development as part of your core employment offering. This keeps your staff engaged and loyal and gives you an edge because your staff will always have the latest technology training. 4. Be completely transparent about anything else. Answer any questions honestly because if you don't, you'll have a high turnover.

The last step is very hard to make a decision in selecting the right candidate after many rounds of an interview. 1. Coding test, aptitude test, GK only cannot decide the candidate to make an offer. Instead, behavioural, decision making etc will also matters in making an offer to an particular candidate. 2. Candidate should be energetic to serve his career for rest of his life at the company. 3. Should be able to manage both Work-Life balance 4. Able to understand the critical situation and make his own decision. So, it's a critical step to finalise a candidate to make an offer.
