DON’T GET DEFENSIVE! Even if you initially think that the criticism is unfair, don’t react instantly. Instant defensiveness is perceived as arrogance and weakness. Try to filter anything that you might interpret as offensive—for now—so that you can clearly listen while eliminating any emotional distress that will fog your ability to perceive clearly.

The company where I work invests heavily in the culture of feedback. The concept of “criticism” is the bias to unhinge. If you receive feedback on something, it means that it is the perception of the person who is giving you the feedback. It is not a personal attack, but an emotion felt by the other person, triggered by something you did (and may not have even realized). Whether it is right or wrong, the important thing is that it is a sincere emotion. So it must be embraced as an opportunity. Try to put yourself in someone else's shoes in that particular context and then figure out together how to better handle a similar situation the next time. No one is angry with you :)

Trust me, this is not easy, but these three things will really help: 1. Don’t lie ever, so you don’t corrupt your perception. Lying will make you really delusional. 2. Have good friends who will hit the brakes on you and tell you when you’re wrong. 3. Learn critical thinking.
