A lot of people think a personal brand is all about creating an image of yourself you feel really good about. That's not it. Until you are an actual superstar, keep the visuals simple. Sure, you can spend months tweaking your color schemes and logo, but until you're really famous, this will not necessarily be time well spent. You can redo all this later, so just pick a few basics – a key color, your "callsign" (mostly your name or nickname), and stick with that. Leave the advanced stuff for later, and in the beginning focus on sales and delivery. Most people do not give a shit about your business card, they care about whether your speech was good and your advice solid. A great logo won't save you if you're a dud on stage.

I've seen people doing the rounds, joining every event, sidling up to everyone, asking questions from every speaker, and getting absolutely nowhere. Until you are contributing, networking won't save you. In fact, it can make you a nuisance. Go to events, sure, but remember to be civil, and do not overstay your welcomes. Don't be a bore, don't waste people's time, take part where you can actually add value. I know this is a difficult lesson for a lot of people in the field, but: Humility is a superpower.

Thought leadership isn't a costume you wear for presentations. It's a lived experience. Everything you do, from client interactions to business decisions, should embody your core values. This authenticity builds trust, the bedrock of any lasting connection. Don't just preach your brand; embody it. Let your work ethic, decisions, and everyday actions be the living testament to your message. This genuine reflection is what truly resonates and inspires.

Updating is important, but here too it is important to have some resilience. If you change what you present as every year or even more often, you will seem like a flake, a cloutchaser, a hypebeast. The number of people I've seen tagging AI onto their brands the moment it became a thing is really laughable, and most did not do this update by having done a serious change in their knowledge, they just updated to look cooler. Good clients see through this kind of bullshit.

Brand is what you tell other people, reputation is what other people say about you. You build a personal brand through consistency. Also, you do not HAVE to have a "personal brand." Plenty, if not most, successful executives do not. You can have an awesome career, get great work, and more without devoting time to defining who you are for other people and posting about it on social media.
