Every product leader has a different preferred method of communication. The best way to learn what this is for your manager is to ask - and specifically ask for a sample artifact to reference. This will help you understand the format and content. For format, this could be a 1-pager, PRD, vision doc, objectives & scenario doc, deck etc. For content, this could mean more visionary, more data-driven, inclusion of dataflow charts etc. Use the feedback from sharing your ideas with your manager to iterate on the format and content for the next time around! They will appreciate the updates to your process and your growth mindset for how you approach sharing product ideas.

When it comes to communication, it's more often than not about how you deliver rather than what you deliver. This means it's vital to adapt how you present the idea to different stakeholders. This can vary in terms of format - I've worked with people who wouldn't look at an idea unless it was following a specific structure in a PDF and others who wanted short videos. To go above and beyond, ensure you can adapt the format for your boss but also their boss to ensure your idea can go all the way.

The major idea here is to tailor your pitch for the audience whether it's one person or a whole board. Then always try to address their goals and pain points, that's how you get attention. It's also important to be data informed in problem definition yet always bring solutions for the those problems. And focus on the desired outcome of your pitch, what do you need from the audience? That will help you build the right storyline

Skip the details around the problem and the solution, and only share these when asked. If you plan to pitch the idea to senior leadership, then get a buy in from your manager and team members.

Timing and time management are crucial because a decision-maker, manager, or executive doesn’t have all the time needed to understand the details of your initiatives. Time is a rare resource for an executive. By choosing the right moment for your presentation, you will maximize your chances to be heard. Regarding time management: by creating an impactful pitch that immediately clarifies the nature of your work and what you aim to achieve, you save the executive’s time and put yourself in a strong position. Focus on creating a clear and compelling narrative that highlights the key benefits and expected outcomes.

Having good timing is crucial for any discussion or proposal. Schedule a meeting with your boss based on his availability. Present your idea at the right moment; however, it is not easy to know when that "right moment" is. You will have to analyze the organization's situation and discuss your point of view accordingly.

Visuals speak louder... When presenting a proposal for a new feature, I employed a concise flowchart that delineated the user's progression and the potential consequences. This image was quite successful, capturing quick attention and effectively conveying the benefits, thus facilitating my boss's understanding and acceptance of my idea. Lesson: Utilizing effective images condenses intricate information, rendering your concepts easily understandable and captivating. Always customize your aids to emphasize the most compelling aspects of your proposal, guaranteeing that they align with the needs of your audience.

Presenting your idea using visuals and showing charts, bars, and flowcharts helps in presenting data better. Do not make your presentation too crowded or overwhelming with unnecessary details, as that would take away the interest due to too much information.

Tailor your content for the audience. I have experience presenting whitepapers in pitches to exciting Visual Graphs. We are pitching for an audience to understand our vision. It needs to speak the language they speak and are engaged in. Having a candid conversation at a leisure hour will help understand a lot about your stakeholders.

Even if you present the best idea, failing to follow up will almost certainly result in the idea or product not reaching fruition. Follow-up is one of the most critical skills a Product Manager must possess. The approach to follow-up should be purposeful and adhere to specific guidelines. It can be either informal or formal, depending on the timing and the manager's behavioral tendencies. Informal follow-up might occur during a meeting, while formal follow-up should be conducted through a polite email to request a response and ensure continued progress.

I have the practice of tailoring an executive summary for my audience. My summary usually carries a Venn diagram of the Business Impact, and Customer Impact. I maintain a short hypothesis, with our measurement strategy and a clearly defined Goal attached to a KPI. Try to maximize your surfaces via email, a message, and a physical meeting. Try to keep a balance between exposure and over-exposure in followups.

When I propose a major feature enhancement to a product, I anticipate objections due to its potential impact on development resources and timeline. To pre-emptively address concerns, I gather data on projected ROI, customer feedback indicating demand, and metrics showcasing potential user engagement uplift. During the presentation, I actively listen to objections regarding resource allocation and feasibility. Using these metrics, I demonstrate how the feature aligns with our strategic goals, emphasizing its potential to capture new market segments and enhance customer retention.

When pitching a project or idea, be prepared for objections and rejections. Listen to your boss properly, and make a note of things that they say. Remember this would also act as one of the mock pitches for every other pitch you'd have to give to the other stakeholders. So every question asked by your boss can help you enhance your pitch. If you've considered the risks and are able to answer the questions well, you have proved your potential. If not, don't worry, be honest about not knowing it and let them know that you'll get back to them after thorough research.
