Timing is more art than science, but a few key things to aware of is busy times (yes, people are always busy, but find the least busy time), and also to avoid times where the company is going through business challenges. Finally, you want to figure out when you have the most strength / leverage. Did you recently get a major win? Step up in some way? That's often a great time.

But if you've got a supportive manager, they will hopefully give you feedback on what you can work on in order to get closer to where you want to be. That's a huge opportunity. Show them that you take their feedback seriously, and are committed to growing and improving your skills. Dedicate time and energy towards that. When you come back to ask for that promotion down the line, it will be much harder to say no.
