Regular updates reinforce priorities. I have a friend who will not start a task until his boss asks for it twice. While this is super passive-aggressive, it is fair. Far too many bosses assign work without reasonable due diligence on the task loading. Regular updates tragically get used as a micromanaging tool. But they are amazing if you use them as an AGILE burnup tool. How often do you turn in an assignment only to get told that the boss disagrees with your starting premise? Regular updates should be the safeguard against "go get a rock" leadership. If we approved it three meetings ago, it's not the line workers' fault you don't like it today.
