The often overlooked first step is to do a needs assessment. Talk to management, directors, Boards of Directors and other stakeholders to determine what their financial goals are. Growth? Stability? ROI for investors? Increasing salaries? Innovation? You need to have this strategic process driven by the stakeholders. Finance is a support role and we don't always know what is best for the organization. Then once you have this done the rest is pretty straightforward: rank them using an appropriate decision matrix, get buy-in, gather data, model, mitigate risk, determine how to measure success , implement, get feedback and repeat. It's key to communicate plan to all stakeholders and regularly reporting progress, including challenges to them.

Here is how we as a Board for have considered strategic options: 1. Know what are organisation's mission is. Ie what business are we in. 2. SWOT & PESTLE analysis 3. Short term, medium term & Long term strategies have to be identified. 4. I as Non Executive Finance Director for a ￡1m+ organisation (with a FD hat on as well) produce the top level plans with scenario analysis. 5. Then decide on best course of action.

Hence, realistic ROI, Cashflow projections, Profit Margin and other financial metrics looking into the future requires an overview/ assessment of qualitative data.

Its very important to envolve a huge part of the stakeholders from the business in a strategic line for the decision Goals. Sometimes, the real information about the market, operation and clients comes from the people on the last line on the Business (suppliers, third parts and HCs) and this allyed with the manager experience is a powerfull tools to make a complete avaliation and take a better decision.
