Sustainable living is only achievable by cooperation from EVERYONE. We can't isolate green living amongst those who speak the loudest for it (i.e. non-profits, corporate mission statements). Inviting and listening to people of varying disciplines (i.e. Architecture, business, commerce) will guarantee everyone's opinion is heard Those voices also need to come from a cross-section of geographic locations (within a city). Different neighborhoods present different challenges and priorities to keep their citizens safe and happy -sustainable practice needs to cover all those bases!

Sustainable design is only achieved through collaboration with your vendors, subcontractors and clients. Each trade should know the updates for sustainability. Such as electrician, plumber, framer and fabric vendor. Once we know what we have to work with then it makes it easier to create a safe, sustainable and sensational space

Designers and engineers are trained to optimize performance, costs and production. Sustainability is far more than a fourth element, it leads to various new, complicated and sometimes indeterminate trade-offs. Diversity of experience, perspectives and skills is not an option, but a must to drive successful sustainable design projects. A good starting point can be a value chain mapping of the respective product or service. This provides a holistic overview of all the people, companies and communities that may come into contact with the product to be designed and could therefore contribute finding the desired solution.

Es interesante poder tener un feedback de distintos sectores que puedan alimentar nuestro dise?o. Pero, aun así, no se debería perder de vista el objetivo que tenemos en mente. Al introducir diferentes pensamientos, pueden desviar el proyecto de manera que, al mejorar un aspecto, otro queda a la deriva o pierde fuerza. Engaging stakeholders is beneficial for both everyone somehow in touch with the product and the product designers. In a recent project, I attended a meeting where product designers and electronic recyclers participated. The latter explained and showed the harmful consequences of hidden batteries in products, which are often not sorted out before material shredding. Hearing firsthand accounts of explosions and fires provided the designers with a new perspective. Furthermore, the meeting allowed them to discuss strategies for making batteries much easier detectable during WEEE recycling.

One critical loop is feedback on potential impacts of design decisions as projects move from concept to detailed design, usually between design and sustainability specialists. Several years back I worked on a refill packaging project where the designers asked me to 'retrospectively backfill the sustainability story' after the design was mostly locked down. No matter we hard tried, the refillable design did not reduce waste more than the single-use option it replaced. They had not done their homework or design properly. This design <> sustainability feedback loop saw us revisit, change and improve the design to deliver on the waste reduction design brief. It's the informed feedback loops we need for successful sustainable design.
