It wasn't that long ago when CRM systems consisted of a legal pad and pen. We have come a long way from that. Today there are multiple digital tools that non-profit leaders can and should be utilizing to manage everything from event planning to stakeholder engagement. Five years ago, I went to work as the development coordinator for a non-profit. The leadership could not tell me who had donated in the past year or how much these unknowns had actually donated. The non-profit had been in operation for several years and had never considered the need for a CRM. Yes, even small non-profits need a CRM in order to keep up with stakeholders. It is just good practice to know who is helping you, and to be able to thank them at the end of the year.

Driving innovation and efficiency in nonprofit leadership through technology can have a significant impact on achieving organizational goals. Implement cloud-based project management and collaboration tools to enhance communication and coordination among team members, volunteers, and partners. Tools like Slack, Trello, or Google Workspace can improve efficiency and productivity in nonprofit operations.

Implementing constituent relationship management (CRM) systems and data analytics tools can help nonprofits better understand their donors, volunteers, and beneficiaries. By analyzing data, organizations can make informed decisions, personalize outreach, and optimize resource allocation.

I will go ahead and say it. If you are a non-profit and not on social media, you are forgoing a large portion of your donors. Social Media is a necessity in the 21st century for telling a story, explaining your mission, and reaching donors where they live. The platform may change with changing demographics, but using social media correctly is necessary, even for small non-profits. Notice that it requires using social media correctly. A social media manager is almost a necessity. Leadership and staff do not have time each day to schedule social media posts and track the analytics. Find a good social media manager and hire them, they will pay for themselves with the donations they bring in.

Leverage digital marketing techniques and social media platforms to raise awareness, engage supporters, and drive advocacy for your cause. Implement targeted advertising campaigns, storytelling strategies, and social media analytics to amplify your nonprofit's message.

One piece of advice that has stayed with me from a conversation with one of my mentors is this: everyone in the non-profit sector is typically a hard worker with the right intentions, but what sets you apart is being a smart worker. This doesn't mean doing your work half-heartedly or skipping elements. Instead, it means striving for maximum efficiency in minimum time. By leveraging technology to streamline processes, automate routine tasks, and enhance data analysis, it’s possible to free up valuable resources and time, especially with the evolving technological landscape. This allows teams to focus on ideation new things, expanding reach, and creating a more profound impact with their work, leading to a larger sense of fulfillment.

Whenever possible, familiarize staff and/or volunteers with the popular resources, especially those which will financially benefit them in future opportunities when they leave your non-profit. Prioritizing the future needs of your staff and/or volunteers will pay dividends and benefit the entire organization.
