The biggest mistake I see candidates make is not dressing up enough for interviews virtually. This also goes for in-person- even if the office is 'casual', you still want to go business-like for the interview. Dress for a virtual interview like you are in person and you'll feel better and interview better.

If you have been scheduled to interview with a company, chances are you have had a chance to have some communication with a team member from the organization. Be sure to ask what the company dress code is. As a rule of thumb, always dress slightly better than expected while not going overboard. Make sure your first impression makes a lasting one!

The Company Culture: Investigate the company's dress code by checking their website, social media, or asking current employees. Align your outfit with their culture—formal for conservative industries and business casual for more relaxed environments. Professional and Well-Fitting Attire: Choose clothes that are clean, well-fitted, and professional. A tailored suit or a blazer with dress pants/skirt is a safe choice for most interviews. Ensure your clothes are free of wrinkles and stains, and avoid overly flashy or casual items. Pay Attention to Details: Accessorize minimally and appropriately. Ensure your shoes are polished, and your hair and nails are neat. Avoid strong fragrances and excessive jewelry. Make sure your teeth are brushed.

First impression is very important here, you should wear classic clothes with formal basic colors like: white, black, blue and grey. Avoid wearing casual(jeans-T-shirts), also keep away from harsh colors like: yellow, orange and red. As for ladies, please do not be over makeup, also do not wear a lot of accessories. Let your original thoughts, intelligence, and accomplishments set you apart. No one was ever faulted for wearing a dark blue suit. Dressing in a yellow suit and giving Big Bird a run for the money, not so much. Once you have the job, then you can see how your boss (and their boss) imprint their style. Until then, take the path of least resistance: neutral colors.

For the interviewer, the goal is to find a candidate who is a good fit for both the organization and the position. Don't wear fragrance. Period. Your "signature scent" might someone else's kryptonite. I speak from personal experience. Have you ever met someone whose cologne was so overpowering, that you literally couldn't wait to get away from them? I have. Have you ever caught a whiff of a cologne, perfume, or aftershave that was so awful that you started retching? A friend of mine has such a violent reaction to musk that the minute they smell a fragrance with musk in it, they double over. Not pretty. Super long nails aren't a good look if you want to be in corporate America. Long nails are distracting, and they undermine your seriousness of purpose.

Opt for neutral colors such as black, navy, gray, or white, as they convey professionalism and are less distracting. Choose conservative styles and avoid trendy or overly fashionable clothing that may not be appropriate for a professional setting.
