Why would agile methodologies only apply to software development...? Agile: "able to deal with new situations or changes quickly and successfully". This clearly does not only apply to software development! I have applied it in marketing initiatives, mechanical engineering, ... Also: a lot of people overlook the first part in the Agile Manifesto for software development: "We are uncovering better ways of developing software by doing it and helping others do it". Uncovering better ways by doing. Agile is about a continuous learning journey.

As simple as it may sound or look but it is quite common that people get confused while differentiating Agile and Scrum and usually end up using both terms inter exchangeable. While attending a training session, I have come across an amazing example where the trainer said "Agile can be considered as a type of diet like "vegan diet" and Scrum is a recipe to execute that vegan diet. So Agile is a mindset while Scrum framework with its exclusive ceremonies helps to implement that mindset within teams.

Scrum is not a subset of agile... It provides one way of living up to the agile manifesto's values and principles. Scrum is not a process either... Each team will have it's own specific processes depending in the context they work. Software engineers will have other processes than mechanical engineers. Rather it is a set of concepts, forming a framework, that wraps around what the organisation is already doing, and allows to continuously improve the product/solutions, and the ways of working; allowing the organisation to keep the agile values and principles in mind. Which is not a given!! And which is why a lot of usages are not delivering the expected results!!

Actually, there are no roles in Scrum... it are called accountabilities. Meaning that one person can take up multiple accountabilities - which is NOT recommended though. Meaning one accountability can be split over multiple people - which for Developer is logical, which can be a good option for Scrum Master, which is NOT recommended for Product Owner. Scrum Master in the article again does not receive the best description... A Scrum Master is accountable for the effectiveness of the team. Which can be by ensuring the people understand the Scrum theory, but in most cases is not the most effective approach... See the word effectiveness; not efficiency...

Scrum does not have any ritual. Ritual: "a way of doing something in which the same actions are done in the same way every time". If a team is doing something every time the same way, then how on earth can the team learn and improve. Words are important; they push people in a certain direction. Scrum does have events. Event: "anything that happens, esp. something important or unusual". Scrum identified 5 important things that should happen. Do these things, evaluate them, learn from it, improve them each and every time.

Sprint Retrospective: A meeting for the team to reflect on the sprint and identify improvements for future sprints. Take care when thinking about Scrum's "specific guidelines". There are not a lot of these in Scrum (see scrumguides.org). A lot of people think that user stories, story points, burndown charts, 3 questions for the Daily Scrum... are "specific guidelines". They are not! These are practices that might help your team, but also may not help your team. Then change these practices please. There are a lot of so called guidelines or rules attributed to Scrum that are myths. If you want to be really sure if it is a Scrum rule, check out the scrumguide at the website with this name. Scrum and Agile both facilitate continuous improvement through regular reflection on becoming more efficient. There is literally an Agile Manifesto Principle stating that: "At regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly." Scrum gives the event a name; Retrospective. Agile does not. Scrum says to hold that event after each increment. Agile says 'at regular intervals' There is very little difference to be found between Agile and Scrum when it comes to continuous improvement.

In a nutshell , Agile is a "mindset", whereas Scrum is one of the many "frameworks" helping Teams to "be Agile" !! Agile allows your team to be innovative & flexible by keeping your context, business priorities and goals in mind. Whereas frameworks like Scrum would be quite prescriptive in terms of Events, Timeboxing, Outcomes, Roles/responsibilities etc. Shu ha ri (roughly translated to “first learn, then detach, and finally, transcend.”) could be a good way a team could use in its Agile transformation : applying a particular framework (like Scrum) for Agility and gradually mature by not being limited by rules/constraints ; instead innovate and contextualize the application of Agile for better productivity and satisfaction!

Brave are those who begin their Agile journey without bowing to the pressure to implementing a rigid framework. It's an interesting exercise to look for differences between Agile and Scrum, but in a Venn diagram the Agile circle would be completely contained inside the Scrum circle. Although somewhat debatable, it's broadly agreed that Scrum embodies Agile's principles and values. When people ask "Agile vs Scrum" they actually mean DIY or System. Lightweight or Structured. Choose your own adventure or follow a path.

Sometimes I have an impression that scrum is being implemented in a way that contradicts agility. Too much focus on tools to drive interactions instead of focusing on human interactions. Too much focus on documenting and reporting from each iteration rather then driving team empowerment and culture. Too big involvement of managers in reviews and tactical decisions with stakeholders rather that team exposure to interaction with stakeholders.
