Here's how you can discover your passions and interests for a career change.

Values Check: Consider what matters most to you in a career. Is it creativity, helping others, or constant learning? Explore Different Paths: Research fields that align with your interests and values. Talk to professionals, read industry blogs, or take online quizzes. Get Hands-On: Volunteer, take a class, or shadow someone in a field that piques your curiosity. Trying things out is key! Embrace the Journey: Finding your passion is a process, not a destination. Be open to new experiences and don't be afraid to adjust your course along the way.

Discovering your passions and interests for a career change involves some self-reflection and exploration. Start by thinking about the hobbies and activities you enjoy in your free time. Consider the skills you excel at and find pleasure in using. Try exploring new areas by taking courses or trying different activities to see what sparks your interest. Seek feedback from friends and family to understand your strengths from their perspective. Follow your curiosity and pursue topics that naturally draw your attention. For example, I realized I loved helping friends with career advice. Reflecting on this passion led me to a career in career counseling, where I could combine my skills and interests to help others professionally.

I like to tell my clients to scour all the job postings and leave no stone unturned. I feel it's better to get inspired by looking through the job ads because you may see something that you had not thought of. Once you find something of interest, see what qualifications are needed. Also, see what "transferrable skills" you have.

I think full commitment is not always needed. (but of course, not a disadvantage) Sometimes you are working at a enough big organization to have a chance for temporary assignments, projects, job rotation, or job shadowing. It is also worth applying for internal training programs that provide valuable insights into other areas and their daily routine.

I would say prior to committing fully to something, you can always 'prototype' your different options, through conversations with those in the fields or through experiencing it yourself (short courses, internships, fellowships, etc.). Afterwards, make sure that you reflect on the career prototypes that you have created to make a well-informed decision moving forward.

You can have passions and interests outside of work, and it is also alright if you do not have any passions at all. Additionally, not all passions and interests need to be translated into career changes (e.g., the thing that you're passionate in doesn't give you a lot of money or simply isn't feasible at the time being). But do prototype, and have fun with the career prototypes that you create!
