Youtube is a great platform to learn skills including writing provided you also practice on your own. The only advantage paid platforms have over youtube is that they has customized practice activities and projects as well and thats where most of the learning happens. Learn from youtube but look for practice projects as well.

For example, here's one I've looked up 10,572 times: lay lie grammar girl Mignon Fogarty (Grammar Girl herself) has been writing on grammar for years. If there's a grammar problem, she's likely addressed it on her blog, in audio, and in video. It's free and such a timesaver. And, who knows? You may just remember the answer before your 10,573rd search!

In 2017, I stumbled upon a free writing course online. Attending this course has been a crucial and defining moment in my writing journey. It helped me identify my writing style, understand my purpose, and recognize my target audience. The course also gave me the confidence to approach publishing companies. It taught me that a free resource can be just as valuable as you make it, as long as you're willing to put in the effort. The fact that a resource is free doesn't diminish its value. When considering enrolling in free resources, my top three priorities are: 1. Evaluating whether the content/outline aligns with my objectives 2. Identifying the target audience 3. Assessing the reviews and results of the resource provider.

Youtube has a plethora of excellent creators who talk about various aspects of writing and literature. You might also check your local community colleges for free of low cost courses. For example, City College of San Francisco is totally free. And lastly, READING is the best lesson for writing.

Platforms like Coursera and Skillshare are the best. Skillshare gives you free trials. Coursera gives you financial aids. And those courses are well-structured and engaging. Not booooring! Go for them.

Both Medium and Substack allow free reading before you decide to subscribe for a low monthly cost. Find writers you LOVE and who serve as inspiration for the voice in which you'd like to write and follow/read and interact with them.

Join an online learning community such as Globe Soup or Absolute Write. (There are also others.) These communities are free to join and vary in their approach and genre, but include avenues for feedback on writing. Globe Soup has free (or low cost) fiction writing contests, with writing tips and frameworks and a community of peer reviewers that burnish writing skills that are transferable across genres and forums. Absolute Write is a message board where one can browse others' writing in a wide variety of genres. After committing to the group (symbolized by posting 50 messages), anyone can "Share Your Work" and get feedback from the thousands of contributors.

Remember that quickness does not necessarily equal amount of gained knowledge. As long as you are learning, comprehending and putting into motion your skills, time is merely a number. Take the time you need to learn, to go back and retain, not to memorise but to actually improve.

Writing is a craft. To master it, you have to do it, not just study it. Make sure that any course you take to improve your writing involves lots of writing and lots of knowledgeable feedback. Anything else is squandering your time and any money you invest.

Whenever you feel stuck at any stage of a learning process, remember that if everybody was gifted when they started learning something new, there were not be any point in learning. Don’t beat yourself up just because you’re at a different stage than others. Change directions, pause, start again. Whatever you need to do.
