I was working with a small nonprofit organization on engagement and one of the questions I asked was if they send their board members, donors, sponsor contacts birthday wishes. I am a big believer in in forecasting. Looking back at where you came from, forecasting where you might be in a year, three years and five years. Tracking expenses can show you where changes need to be made and can help build that plan. Forecasting also helps you to review any new facility updates, equipment updates, budgeting changes and so that might be coming up in the future which gives you a better handle on where you will be. I do quarterly review of each department with the directors and a monthly review with our finance team.

Planning is the key to success. Have a clear understanding of where you want to go allows you to build a plan that is fluid and can be adjusted for different circumstances. I use the SWOR method within our organization to continuedly be building on our long-range plans. We look at and discuss these different areas on a monthly basis is staff meetings to ensure that we are maximizing our effectiveness with the different areas we identify. We review this at our annual retreat to confirm we are on the right path and to update if we have had a change or shift in our communities, organization, finances, or culture.
